MoveMEANT Destination: Hoʻokupu

  1. Are airfare and accommodation included in the fee?
No. The fees only include daily tuition for our Kumu (teachers) and all supply fees. Participants are responsible for their own airfare, accommodation and local transportation. We do have housing partnership available through University of Hawaii’s visitor housing at the East West Center, starting at $77 a night for a double occupancy. Please EMAIL US if you would like to stay at the university visitor housing.

  2. Are meals included in the fee?
Meals are not included. Please be prepared to pack your own lunches and snacks as there aren’t stores around most locations we are visiting. Most days we will be outdoors and on-site!

  3. How much additional living expenses should I include for my time in Hawaii?
Cost of living can get expensive! We would suggest a daily expense of $30-$50 (if you are cooking and preparing your own food) or more if you plan to eat out. We also suggest renting a car to get around easily. Gas prices on Oahu are around $5.70 per gallon.

  4. Are children and teens allowed?
Keik and teens are welcome to join with additional daily fees. Each daily fee covers up to 3 minors.

  5. Where should I stay on Oahu?
We recommend the University of Hawaii visitors housing at the East West Center. Please fill out the form HERE and follow the instructions on the form to apply for housing. You can also stay at any hotel legal short-term rental places or hotels in Waikiki / Ala Moana areas.

  6. What airport should I fly to?
The Daniel Inouye Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. Airport code: HNL

  7. Who are the facilitators?
Kumu ʻAuliʻi Aweau is the main facilitator for the full retreat. A different Hawaiian cultural practitioner will join Kumu ʻAuliʻi each day to teach different workshops. Sample Kumu biographies are available here

  8. Is there scholarship available?
We do have a limited scholarship available for artists, educators and Kanaka Maoli. Please contact us to inquire.

  9. I am not a dancer. Can I join?
Absolutely. MoveMEANT Destination is designed for dancers and those who are dancers at heart. :) No dance experience is needed.

  10. What should I bring?
A refillable water bottle, comfy clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirt on, bathing suit, a blanket for sitting on the grass, and a paʻu skirt  / pareo for Hula. A rain jacket is also recommended as it will be Lono season - which means rain!

  11. I’m differently-abled. Is the retreat for me?
We respect and honor the different abilities and capabilities each participant brings to the program. Please let us know if you have needs and requirements that would help make this experience accessible for you. We are happy to work with you to modify activities and provide assistance.
